John Latham

Hand-coloured bird engravings from John Latham's work A General History of Birds. The work was published by Winchester, Jacob and Johnson between 1821 and 1828.

This work was very important because it depicted species from New Holland (Australia) and New Zealand for the first time.

Latham is regarded by many as "The Grandfather of Australian ornithology" and is credited with being the first to describe and name many Australian birds.
